INSIDE NORTH DAKOTA – In a heartwarming display of determination and linguistic prowess, 12-year-old Chilaka Ugobi, born to Nigerian immigrant parents, has emerged as the champion of the North Dakota State Spelling Bee. He is a seventh grader at Our Redeemer’s Christian school, Minot.
Chilaka’s remarkable journey to the top began when he arrived in the United States with his family at the age of 6. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country and language, Chilaka’s parents, Emmanuel and Nneoma Ugobi, encouraged his love for learning and words.
“I remember when Chilaka first started speaking English, he would ask me to explain the meaning of every word,” said Nneoma Ugobi, beaming with pride. “He has always been fascinated by language and its power to connect people.”
Chilaka’s fascination with words led him to spend hours poring over dictionaries, reading books, and practicing spelling with his family. His hard work paid off when he won his school’s spelling bee, and then went on to claim the top spot at the state level.
“I’m so grateful to my parents for supporting me and encouraging me to pursue my passion for words,” said Chilaka, his eyes shining with excitement. “I’m also thankful to my teachers and coaches who helped me prepare for the competition.”
As the newly crowned state champion, Chilaka will represent North Dakota at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. later this year. He is the first Nigerian-American to represent the state at the national level.
“Chilaka’s achievement is a testament to the power of immigrant families who bring their talents, traditions, and values to our communities,” said Fargo Mayor, Tim Mahoney. “We are proud to support Chilaka on his journey to the national spelling bee and beyond.”
As Chilaka prepares to take the national stage, he remains humble and focused on his goals. “I’m just going to keep practicing and learning as much as I can,” he said. “I want to make my family and community proud.”
Chilaka’s inspiring story serves as a reminder that with dedication, perseverance, and a love for learning, anything is possible, regardless of one’s background or circumstances.
