U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced his resignation, effective immediately, after leading the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) for nearly five years. Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will take the reins until a permanent successor is named by the USPS governing board.

DeJoy’s departure comes as the USPS continues to face financial challenges, having lost over $100 billion since 2007. During his tenure, DeJoy implemented various cost-cutting measures and reforms aimed at improving efficiency and reversing losses. However, his efforts were often met with criticism from lawmakers and union leaders.

In a statement, DeJoy expressed confidence in the organization’s ability to continue implementing its transformation and modernization strategies. He had previously announced his intention to retire and had asked the USPS Board of Governors to begin searching for his replacement last month.

The search for a new postmaster general is underway, with the USPS governing board working to identify a suitable candidate. In the meantime, Tulino will lead the agency, which has been grappling with financial struggles and proposals for privatization or restructuring.
