The Trump administration has announced a significant change in its housing policy, prohibiting illegal migrants and non-permanent residents from receiving Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgages. This move marks a departure from the previous administration’s policies, which allowed non-permanent residents, including DACA recipients, to access government-backed home loans.

According to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, the decision aims to prevent American taxpayers from subsidizing “open borders” by providing home loans to individuals who entered the country illegally. Turner emphasized that the agency is “prioritizing Americans, not illegal aliens.”

The new policy will affect not only illegal migrants but also non-permanent residents, including those with pending asylum claims. This change comes on the heels of another announcement by HUD, which plans to work with the Department of Homeland Security to bar illegal migrants from public housing.

HUD cited data showing that 59% of illegal migrant households benefit from at least one government welfare program, resulting in approximately $42 billion in costs. The agency noted that there are around 9 million residents of public and subsidized housing without proper information sharing to determine eligibility status.
